Another look at Autism

Merck’s Vaccines Division, Julie Gerberding confirmed to CBS News while she was Director of the CDC that, “if you’re predisposed with the mitochondrial disorder, it can certainly set off some damage. Some of the symptoms can be symptoms that have characteristics of autism.” That’s just a loose tie though. That’s not the MMR vaccine literally CAUSING autism. Dysfunction in mitochondria in the brain is already associated with a number of other neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

In a population-based study in 2007, the medical conditions of 120 children with autism was screened. 76% were diagnosed with typical autism and 24% with atypical autism. There are different types of autism. It would be smart to assume that there are also likely different causes.

autism causeApparently, babies born prematurely  also have a higher risk of autism.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one out of every 100 eight-year-old kids has autism. The new study, which was published in the journal Pediatrics, found that five out of every 100 young adults who was born weighing less than four and a half pounds had autism. That certainly does seem to indicate a link, doesn’t it? The premie population seems to be five times more inclined to get autism.

But what else? SOMETHING is different between the 95% of tiny premies that didn’t get autism and the 5% that did, because with the vast majority of children getting vaccinated, it can’t be just that.

“Another thing very injurious to the child, is the tying and cutting of the navel string too soon; which should always be left till the child has not only repeatedly breathed but till all pulsation in the cord ceases. As otherwise the child is much weaker than it ought to be, a portion of the blood being left in the placenta, which ought to have been in the child.”

Erasmus Darwin, Zoonomia, 1801

I’d be very curious, of those five percent of babies who were born weighing less than four and a half pounds, could those be the ones who were so high risk that their cords were clamped and cut immediately after birth to be risked away to the ICU?

I only mention this because I found this release online earlier today:

Another interesting development though is that researchers at the  University of Missourihave found distinct differences between the facial characteristics of children with autism. This could help researchers understand what causes it. According to the team:

  • Children with autism have a broader upper face, including wider eyes.
  • Children with autism have a shorter middle region of the face, including the cheeks and nose.
  • Children with autism have a broader or wider mouth and philtrum — the divot below the nose, above the top lip.

New evidence suggests that a child most likely must be predisposed to autism in order to ever get it. So, what is that predisposition factor? Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory  believe they know. One of the most common genetic alterations in autism — deletion of a gene cluster on chromosome 16 causes autism-like features.  Those researchers replicated the gene cluster deletion in rats and found them to exhibit hyperactivity, difficulty adapting to a new environment, sleeping deficits, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. According to the researchers, this awareness could prove to provide early diagnosis and better clinical intervention.

Does your child suffer from autism?  These theories being proposed about the ties between premature birth and autism, can you provide anecdotal support?

A New Red Flag for Autism Predisposition?

Merck’s Vaccines Division’s, Julie Gerberding, confirmed to CBS News while she was Director of the CDC that, “if you’re predisposed with the mitochondrial disorder, it can certainly set off some damage. Some of the symptoms can be symptoms that have characteristics of autism.”

While vaccine safety is still being adamantly proclaimed by pharmaceutical companies, the CDC and the FDA, parents are still nervous. That nervousness certainly wasn’t subsided any when the US Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) confirmed to CBS News that of 1322 cases of vaccine injury compensation settled out of court by the US Government saying, “We have compensated cases in which children exhibited an encephalopathy, or general brain disease. Encephalopathy may be accompanied by a medical progression of an array of symptoms including autistic behavior, autism, or seizures.” The government agency did not admit a causal link between vaccines and autism though. Still, many parents aren’t buying it. In fact, a federal survey released last month, which included more than 17,000 households, showed that at least 1 in 10 toddlers and preschoolers were not on track the recommended vaccine guidelines .

Parents feel completely overwhelmed with the Russian Roulette factor of vaccines. How do they know if their child will become one of the statistics in the VAERS database?

The Archives of General Psychiatry reported their results from an MRI study which included 51 children with autism and 25 control children between 18 and35 months of age. Their initial findings suggest head size may be an indicator of potential for autism. They stated, ”Significant enlargement was detected in cerebralcortical volumes but not cerebellar volumes in individuals withautism. Enlargement was present in both white and gray matter, and it was generalized throughout the cerebral cortex. Headcircumference appears normal at birth, with a significantlyincreased rate of HC (head circumference) growth appearing to begin around 12 monthsof age.”

I mean, it certainly wasn’t a huge study. Only 76 children. But it was significant enough for the psychiatrists to to write home about. Having an increase in growth rate of the body and head compared to the child’s statistics at birth seem to, at least possibly, be an indicator for a predisposition to autism. It’s possible that it’s more of an effect of autism that is not yet understood, but it could be a giant red flag warning of a predisposition. It won’t subside the concerns about other vaccination risks, but it could perhaps lend support to the idea of delayed vaccinations, giving the child time to demonstrate this trait. It’s not a lot to go on.

But it’s something.

Vaccine Ingredients

I’m not taking a stance one way or another on whether or not to vaccinate your children. I don’t feel it’s my place. I’ve chosen a middle ground for my own children, but I’m not even suggesting anyone choose the middle ground.

That’s not what this blog is.

This blog is to help you make your own informed decision. I know many of my mommy friends feel overwhelmed when facing this decision. So, without making any kind of stance, I will just do the busy work for you. Then, you can make your own informed decision.

Here is a brief explanation of a few of the key players involved in vaccines:

Aluminum Hydroxyphosphate Sulfate: Aluminum is the most commonly used adjuvant (substance added to a vaccine to amplify the immune response) in vaccines. The FDA has continued to approve the use of aluminum as an additive to vaccines for many years, however, a newborn who gets a Hepatitis B injection at birth would receive 250 mcg of aluminum, but the FDA also recommends that premature babies, and anyone with impaired kidney function, receive no more than 10 to 25 mcg of injected aluminum at any one time.

Animal Cells: This has been getting a lot of attention lately. The rotavirus vaccine was pulled temporarily when it was found to contain contaminated pig cells. The major concern is that contaminated animal DNA can cause secondary disease when injected into humans. This mirrors the huge concerns from the past when it was discovered that the polio vaccine given for years (which used monkey DNA) was contaminated with a monkey virus, which was found to cause brain and lung cancer in humans.

Egg Protein: This is added as a stabilizer to many vaccines.  The big concern is for children with allergic reactions to egg.

Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a naturally occurring substance made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Formaldehyde has been shown to weaken the immune system and is listed as a potential carcinogen. It is used in vaccines to inactivate the viruses and detoxify the bacteria that is used to make vaccines.

Neomycin: This is an antibiotic. It is added to prevent bacterial contamination during the manufacturing. The predominant concern, besides the overuse of antibiotics creating resistant strains of bacteria, is allergic reactions to it.
