Autism, Mitochondria and Mitochondrial Toxic Medicines.

Mitochondrial damage is getting lots of attention recently.  As new, expecting or experienced natural moms, this is a hot topic in the Everything Birth community mostly because it is the one admitted link between vaccines and autistic like behavior.

Merck’s Vaccines Division, Julie Gerberding confirmed to CBS News while she was Director of the CDC that, “if you’re predisposed with the mitochondrial disorder, it (the MMR vaccine) can certainly set off some damage. Some of the symptoms can be symptoms that have characteristics of autism.”

In addition to our non-organic food sources like high fructose corn syrup which in various forms is nearly everything, including formula, there are medications that are stated by Mito Action as being reported to be mitochondrial toxic. Some very common medications that we give our children and even take during pregnancy may be harming our children’s mitochondria and setting them up for a decreased ability to stay healthy as well as a decreased ability to handle the bodily trauma from vaccinations. Many of you have witnessed my journey through deciding not to vaccinate my own daughter any longer through posts on this blog, but in an attempt to stay fair and seek out truth, I want to point out something that I found very interesting.

How many vaccinating moms are told to give the baby Tylenol (Acetaminophen)  just before or just after their vaccinations? Most of my vaccinating mom friends get told to give tylenol just before the vaccination visit to help with any pain. Those that aren’t though, are usually told to give it afterwards for pain, and to prevent or treat a fever that arises from vaccines.

Acetaminophen though, according to Mito Action, is toxic to mitochondria. 

Keep in mind as you ponder this, I am not a doctor. I’d just like for us to think on this for a moment. If we chose to vaccinate, we generally hold our breath for a few days with our fingers crossed, right? What if there is something to this? What if this practice of giving Tylenol just before or just after being injected with multiple vaccines could be a factor in the autism epidemic that has stricken 1 in 88 of our children in the US? Another thing to consider before giving Tylenol before or after a vaccination is that when put to the test, more children get a fever with vaccines when Tylenol is given than when it is not given at all.

 

 

Another look at Autism

That’s not the MMR vaccine literally CAUSING autism. Dysfunction in mitochondria in the brain is already associated with a number of other neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

In a population-based study in 2007, the medical conditions of 120 children with autism was screened. 76% were diagnosed with typical autism and 24% with atypical autism. There are different types of autism. It would be smart to assume that there are also likely different causes.

autism causeApparently, babies born prematurely  also have a higher risk of autism.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one out of every 100 eight-year-old kids has autism. The new study, which was published in the journal Pediatrics, found that five out of every 100 young adults who was born weighing less than four and a half pounds had autism. That certainly does seem to indicate a link, doesn’t it? The premie population seems to be five times more inclined to get autism.

But what else? SOMETHING is different between the 95% of tiny premies that didn’t get autism and the 5% that did, because with the vast majority of children getting vaccinated, it can’t be just that.

As otherwise the child is much weaker than it ought to be, a portion of the blood being left in the placenta, which ought to have been in the child.”

I’d be very curious, of those five percent of babies who were born weighing less than four and a half pounds, could those be the ones who were so high risk that their cords were clamped and cut immediately after birth to be risked away to the ICU?

Another interesting development though is that researchers at the  University of Missourihave found distinct differences between the facial characteristics of children with autism. This could help researchers understand what causes it. According to the team:

  • Children with autism have a broader upper face, including wider eyes.
  • Children with autism have a shorter middle region of the face, including the cheeks and nose.
  • Children with autism have a broader or wider mouth and philtrum — the divot below the nose, above the top lip.

New evidence suggests that a child most likely must be predisposed to autism in order to ever get it. So, what is that predisposition factor? Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory  believe they know. One of the most common genetic alterations in autism — deletion of a gene cluster on chromosome 16 causes autism-like features.  Those researchers replicated the gene cluster deletion in rats and found them to exhibit hyperactivity, difficulty adapting to a new environment, sleeping deficits, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. According to the researchers, this awareness could prove to provide early diagnosis and better clinical intervention.
